Elementary

QSI believes in 'Success for All' and that all students can achieve at a high level given enough time and feedback. Mastery learning is the instructional strategy used in all QSI schools. Small class sizes allow the teacher to keep working with a student until the student demonstrates a high level of understanding on each topic of study. 

QSI curriculum is reviewed and revised by current, expert educators on a seven-year cycle. It is implemented worldwide and is aligned with the American Common Core State Standards. The Common Core Standards were developed to ensure a rigorous and consistent education in USA schools. Likewise, QSI's curriculum amply prepares students for their post-secondary education and career.

Within the daily elementary academic programming, students attend a Chinese language course specific for their age level.  

Students are immersed in both Chinese as a Language and as a culture.  

Elementary students follow a Chinese language literacy program that strives for complete literacy in reading, writing and oral competencies.  

The elementary academic program follows an eight-period day:^†‡

^†Specialist classes are offered on rotation and include: Art, Music, Physical Education, Technology, Library and Special Activities.

QSI believes students learn best when they are well placed according to their skills and knowledge. Students are placed in a homeroom based on age but are able to move up or down grade levels in Mathematics and Literacy. Additionally, students developing English proficiency will be placed in the Intensive English program to support their language acquisition. 

In addition to focusing on students' academic growth, teachers also strive to teach the importance of lifelong values and characteristics that lead to success. We call these values Success Orientations. They include:

Status Reports will be emailed home five times per year. Below are the evaluations used by QSI: 

Academic Evaluations

Students receive an evaluation for each unit 

A-Above Mastery: The student has a strong understanding of the unit and consistently demonstrates higher order thinking  

B-Mastery: The student understands everything in the unit 

P-In Progress: The student is still working on one or more objectives in the unit 

H-On Hold: The teacher has put the unit on hold 

D-Deficient in Effort: The student is not demonstrating enough effort for the teacher to assess their understanding. This is a temporary evaluation.

Evaluations, called status reports, are issued to all students five times each year (at the end of each "quintile"). However, parents may request a status report for their child at any time.
